MEET THE AUTHORS

Becoming a Self-Differentiated Leader brings together three perspectives on how people lead, relate, and grow. Patricia Gianotti, Psy.D., is a licensed psychologist and Academic Director of The Institute for Advanced Psychotherapy at Loyola University Chicago, with more than 30 years of experience in attachment, executive coaching, and conflict management. Stephen Gianotti, M.S., B.Ed., founded The Woodland Group and has spent over three decades helping organizations on five continents think and act from a systems perspective. Hoh Kim, Ph.D., founder of THE LAB h, serves as an executive sounding board for global leaders, drawing on his years as managing director of Edelman Korea and his work as a woodcraft artist and author. Together, they translate clinical, organizational, and executive experience into practical tools for leading well at work and in life.

AI is now the smartest entity in many rooms. It can produce strategy documents, crunch data, and generate plans. What it cannot do is sense the unspoken tension in a team, repair a fractured relationship, or lead with genuine human presence. That gap — between algorithmic intelligence and relational intelligence — is the leadership opportunity of our time.

This book builds the case for what we call Relationship Smartness: the ability to build trust, navigate emotional friction, and repair fractured loyalty, a core competency of 21st-century leadership.

We all have two fundamental needs that must be met in order to survive and thrive:

  • The first is our need to safely feel a sense of belonging.

  • The second is our need to be valued as a unique human being.

The Solution: The Four Cornerstones of Effective Leadership

Within the chapters of this book, we provide four cornerstones of leadership that outline how to fully realize your personal and professional potential. You will also gain a better understanding of what motivates productivity, initiative, creativity, and loyalty in your employees. These cornerstones are the key to uncovering personal and systemic blind spots that fuel uncertainty, reactivity and negativity that get in the way of personal mastery.
